ARTIST STATEMENT:

There is something magical about the interconnectedness of all life, and in the primal human fascination with the natural world. Rooted in science and a lifetime of observing nature, my work explores my spiritual connection to and awe of the landscape with recognition of climate change and resulting ecological destruction. The beauty and resiliency of ancient natural systems give me hope, but I also despair that the planet is suffering.

Layers and transparency are a significant part of how I think about the history and ecology of the land, and the human impact on the environment. I experiment with plant and animal forms to create light and dark, dripping color, and shifting fields. I simplify and flatten animals often into shapes of transparent color or glowing line drawings, and weave them into the landscape. My work, like the land, has many hidden details that take time to be discovered and considered. As humanity struggles to face climate change and environmental degradation, my work provides valuable commentary on the importance of understanding and caring for the complex natural world.
